SUMMER MEMORIES AND MAMAW POLLY’S PEACH PIE

When I think of summertime, I often recall my childhood visits to the local orchard, picking peaches with my mother and sister. Those sunny days spent among the trees, the sweet aroma of ripe peaches in the air, and the laughter shared between us created cherished memories that I hold close to my heart. Food can hold such sweet memories in our minds, transporting us back to some of the most special occasions of our lives.

As the warm weather rolls in, one dessert stands out in our family: my husband’s favorite, Mamaw Polly’s Peach Pie. This pie is the quintessential summer dish to bring to any gathering. It’s not just a treat; it’s a slice of nostalgia, a reminder of the love and care that goes into homemade food. Every bite is filled with the essence of summer and the memories of family gatherings under the sun.

A LESSON IN LOVE

What makes this pie even more special to me is the journey I took to learn how to make it in Mamaw Polly’s kitchen. If you ever want to meet a true, faithful, traditional homemaker, you need to stop by Mamaw’s house, where you’ll be greeted with a glass of sweet tea and homemade cookies. The warmth of her home and the love she pours into everything she does is palpable.

Over the years, I’ve watched her with wide eyes as she effortlessly blended ingredients, her hands moving with the confidence of years of practice. Each lesson has been filled with laughter, stories, and a sprinkle of wisdom. Mamaw Polly doesn’t just teach me recipes; she instills in me the values of cooking, gardening, and serving others with love.

THE ART OF HOMEMAKING

I credit much of my own homemaking skills to our sweet Mamaw Polly. She has taught me so much about cooking, gardening, serving her family, and loving those she serves. Her approach to homemaking is not just about preparing meals; it’s about creating a nurturing environment filled with warmth and connection.

Through her, I learned the importance of using fresh ingredients, often plucked straight from the garden. Mamaw’s enthusiasm for gardening inspired me to cultivate my own backyard patch, where I now grow herbs and vegetables that add a personal touch to my cooking.

CHERISHING OUR “MAMAW’S”

I hope everyone has their own “Mamaw” in their life that they cherish as much as I do mine! Whether it’s a grandmother, aunt, or family friend, these figures often serve as the cornerstone of our culinary traditions and family memories. They teach us not just recipes but the stories and love behind each dish.

In the spirit of summer and honoring the cherished memories we create with our loved ones, I want to share Mamaw Polly’s delicious Peaches & Cream Pie recipe. It’s a perfect way to celebrate the season and create new memories with your family!

PEACHES & CREAM PIE

1 baked pie crust

3/4 c sugar

2 tbsp corn starch

1 c water

3 tbsp peach Jello powder

1 tbsp butter

2 cups peaches, peeled and sliced

4 oz cream cheese, soften

1 c Cool Whip

Add sugar, corn starch, and water together in a pot and bring to a boil. Take off heat and add the Jello powder, stirring together, and then add your butter. Set aside and let cool. While it’s cooling, cream together your cream cheese and Cool Whip, and set aside. Slice your peaches and add them to your Jello mixture. Spread your cream mixture in the bottom of your baked pie crust, and then add your peaches and Jello mixture on top. Chill in the fridge for at least 3-4 hours until set. Optional, but definitely delicious, top the whole pie with extra Cool Whip and enjoy!
